What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy is a simple, safe treatment that uses special light to treat jaundice in newborns. Jaundice happens when babies have too much bilirubin in their blood, which makes their skin and eyes look yellow.
When Does Your Baby Need Phototherapy?
Your baby may need phototherapy if:
- Their skin or eyes appear yellow
- Blood tests show high bilirubin levels
- They're not feeding well or seem very sleepy
- They were born prematurely
How Phototherapy Works
During treatment::
- Your baby will be placed under special blue lights or on a light-emitting blanket
- The light helps break down bilirubin so it can be removed from the body
- Your baby's eyes will be protected with soft patches
- Treatment usually lasts 1-3 days, depending on bilirubin levels
- We monitor your baby closely throughout treatment
Safety and Comfort
Phototherapy is very safe for babies. Our team ensures your baby stays comfortable, well-fed, and properly hydrated throughout treatment. Parents are encouraged to continue bonding with and feeding their baby during breaks from the lights.
